  • AOPA Germany – Safety Letters

Archive of around 60 free safety letters as PDFs on flight safety topics from landing technique and airspace to high mountains. A stable starting point for looking up a specific topic. (German)

  • Safety Letter No. 60 – landing errors

Systematic presentation of typical landing errors: flaring too early and too late, ballooning, long floating at excessive approach speed, hard landings and bouncing. With sections on crosswind, sloping runways and go-arounds. (German)

  • Safety Letter No. 15 – special landing techniques

Short landing, landing on soft ground, sloping and narrow runways, crosswind landing with both methods and go-arounds. Directly applicable to short grass and mountain airfields. (German)

  • fliegermagazin – landing at difficult airfields

Article on short, narrow, undulating and sloping runways: approach speed, obstacles, downdraughts, grip on wet grass and optical illusions on sloping ground. (German)

  • fliegermagazin – crosswind landing

Explains the crab angle and sideslip in detail and distinguishes three limits: the demonstrated crosswind component from the flight manual, your personal limit and the controllability of the type. (German)

  • BFU – investigation reports and bulletins

Publications of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation: investigation reports since 1998, monthly bulletins, flight safety information and annual statistics. The search can be used to analyse landing accidents of ultralights and light aircraft specifically.

  • FAA Airplane Flying Handbook

Free standard textbook of the US aviation authority. Chapter 8 covers circuits and airfield procedures, chapter 9 approaches and landings including short-field, grass-field, crosswind and go-arounds. More detailed than comparable free German sources.

  • SKYbrary – flight safety knowledge

English-language knowledge base on flight safety: hazards, accident analyses, human factors and weather – thorough and freely accessible.
