Switzerland begins a good 160 kilometres to the south-west at Lake Constance. Within 250 kilometres of Holzkirchen there are 13 airfields in eastern Switzerland, the Glarus region and the Engadin – from St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport via small airfields to glider sites.

What applies to a German ultralight

An ultralight registered abroad needs a special permission from the FOCA (BAZL) for Switzerland. Prerequisite: the type is on the FOCA list of ultralights entitled to enter. The Aeroprakt A22 LS with type data sheet DULV 991-22 – i.e. our D-MRBT – is on it (list as of 29.09.2026). The application goes to the FOCA by e-mail at least 10 working days before the first flight, with proof of airworthiness and registration, noise certificate, annual inspection, liability insurance and radio licence. The permission is valid for at most two months per calendar year (can be split), and every flight is recorded by self-declaration.

With the permission the ultralight may fly in all airspace classes, as far as the licence allows; anyone living in Germany flies with the German ultralight licence. Switzerland is a Schengen country but not part of the EU customs union: entry and exit only via airfields with customs facilities and prior notice – the cards show where this is possible. A flight plan is required for crossing the border. Almost all small airfields are private and require PPR.

FOCA – ultralights entitled to enter · FOCA – application and documents · ask the FOCA about the fee.

Unchecked data: the official Swiss VFR Manual is only available by subscription from skybriefing (about 56 € a year). The cards below therefore come from the AD info sheets and approach charts that some operators publish themselves, from operator websites and from pilot reports. Frequencies are only given where they come from the current approach chart. Before the flight, always check the VFR Manual and NOTAM and ask the airfield itself.
